Thunderful Group Launches Restructuring Initiative Amid Financial Challenges
Thunderful Group has announced a significant restructuring effort aimed at downsizing its workforce within its gaming development and publishing sectors. This move comes as the company grapples with persistent negative cash flow, prompting the need for cost-saving measures to enhance financial stability. The restructuring is anticipated to yield reductions in operational expenses, which should lead to an improved cash flow situation moving forward. As of the end of June, Thunderful reported a net debt of SEK 85 million (approximately $8.8 million) and available liquidity of SEK 32 million (around $3.3 million). The anticipated workforce reductions, which will impact game development studios and the publishing division along with other central services, are projected to save between SEK 6-8 million (about $622,000-$829,000) in the latter half of 2025, and SEK 40-45 million (around $4.1 to $4.6 million) for the entire year of 2026.The company indicated that its publishing segment faced “a challenging quarter,” highlighting an over-reliance on the success of individual game launches as a major concern. Specifically, the game Lost in Random: The Eternal Die, which debuted on June 17, has underperformed, leading to weaker than anticipated sales. Meanwhile, the co-development and services sector met expectations in terms of utilization, though Thunderful remains reliant on securing both existing and new clientele going into 2026 and beyond.
Leadership Comments on Tough Decisions
Patrick Svensk, chairman of Thunderful, expressed regret over the necessity of implementing further operational changes affecting some employees. He emphasized that these decisions, while difficult, are essential for creating a streamlined publishing organization capable of maintaining its planned release schedule. This restructuring marks the latest chapter in a series of layoffs and divestments for Thunderful. Notably, Agostino Simonetta, the former chief games officer, left the company in December 2023 amid a leadership shakeup. In January, Thunderful cut its workforce by 20% due to previous over-investments. In February, CEO Martin Walfisz assured stakeholders that the restructuring efforts were progressing positively. April saw Thunderful divest its video game and accessory distributor, Nordic Game Supply, as part of a strategy to shed “non-strategic assets.” Subsequently, in November, the company revealed another restructuring plan targeting its publishing division, leading to layoffs of between 80 and 100 employees. Earlier this year, Jumpship co-founder Dino Patti reacquired his studio from Thunderful, which had been purchased in 2022.
Atari Enters Strategic Alliance with Thunderful
In the midst of Thunderful’s restructuring, Atari has announced a partnership that will see the two companies engage in a directed share offering amounting to SEK 50.0 million (approximately $5.1 million). According to the investor statement released today, Atari will acquire roughly 82% of Thunderful’s total shares and voting rights through the issuance of 333,333,334 new ordinary shares priced at SEK 0.15 each, equating to the total investment of $5.1 million. This transaction is contingent upon shareholder approval at Thunderful’s extraordinary general meeting scheduled for around August 28. The deal has garnered unanimous backing from Thunderful’s board, as well as from two shareholders, Owe Bergsten and Brjann Sigurgeirsson, who together hold 29.9% of the company’s capital and voting rights. Notably, Atari is exempt from making a mandatory bid for the remaining shares in Thunderful, thanks to a provision from the Swedish Securities Council.
Atari’s Vision for Future Growth
Wade Rosen, chairman and CEO of Atari, described this transaction as a pivotal moment in the company’s evolution, enhancing its publishing and development capacities in Europe. He highlighted Thunderful’s reputation for publishing and developing critically acclaimed titles, asserting confidence that with the announced transformation strategy, Thunderful will return to a path of profitable growth while simultaneously aiding Atari’s expansion in Europe. In September 2024, Rosen remarked that Atari is shifting away from merely following trends, having invested heavily in acquiring studios like Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios, which he termed “North Star” acquisitions for Atari. While open to future acquisitions, he emphasized the need for caution, noting the complexities and potential pitfalls that come with integrating new teams. Rosen also addressed the concept of opportunity cost, stressing that the time and resources invested in acquisitions could detract from other business ventures. He underscored the importance of focusing on sustainability as a primary goal. Thunderful Group has been approached by Game Developer for further insights regarding its restructuring efforts.
